A huge continent with a diverse population and lifestyles in extremes, Africa has some incredible beaches, many of them wild, and some ultra-developed such as the beaches of South Africa around major cities like Cape Town and Durban. While most of Africa’s beaches are coastal and therefore saltwater, some are on lakes. A large chunk of Africa is desert, but where else can you find that much sand!

Africa may be one of the most misunderstood lands on Earth. Perhaps by getting to know its beaches, we can better understand its people and culture, from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, this diverse continent has much to offer for the traveler, be that for vacation or exploration.

This section of includes the African countries of Algeria, Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritanian, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Sao Tome & Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zaire, and Zambia. We will also include in this region the Canary Islands; although part of Spain, they are geographically close to the northwest coast of Africa.

Like Central America, there are countries in Africa that may have great beaches and hot, sunny weather, but the political climate is another matter, and travelers are advised to avoid them. Somalia and Libya are the obvious examples. Regardless, we will profile their beaches as a matter of interest to our readers and hope that these nations find their peace so that we can all visit their seaside towns and villages in person.

Situated on the Red Sea, the small nation of Eritrea has a surprisingly lively tourism industry, with upward of 400,000 visitors per year, modern cities and a range of cultural entertainment. It claims to be Africa’s best-kept secret, and we’ll report on its beaches, even if it means letting the beach ball out of the bag!

Tourists from all over the globe visit South Africa’s beautiful beaches. Some are ideal for surfing, others for swimming; no matter what the activity, the weather is dependable and the beaches are clean and fairly safe.
