The slow and easy pace of Playa Oriente Beach is emphasized in its laid-back Mexicalitos restaurant and beach bar that dominates the sand. Popular with adults and children, the establishment offers fish-based cuisine, cold beer and margaritas, and a few rounds of ring toss (better played before the beer!).
This very popular beach has sand so white and deep you almost lose your footing. Hammocks, for the lazy among us who must have an afternoon siesta because we are, after all, in Mexico, abound. They are comfortably slung between palm trees and under shaded trellises. If that style of napping doesnít suit you, park under one of the thatched beach umbrellas on a lounge chair and dream the day away.
This is a decent beach for swimming, but caution is required. Rip tides are common, and need to be respected. If you get caught in a rip tide, swim parallel to the shoreline until you are past the vortex of the rip tide and then swim back to shore; never panic.
Playa Oriente Beach has been the surprise landing spot for many a visitor who left places like Cuba and Haiti, hoping for a different life. Not a bad place to land by accident or by purpose!
