In the province of KwaZulu-Natal, the greater metropolitan area of Durban boasts a population of 3.5 million and is the busiest commercial
harbor in the entire continent. There are more swimmers here than surfers (they flock to North Coast Beach) thanks to lower waves and swells, making this a preferred
spot for families with children.
Like Durbanís North Coast Beach, South Coast Beach offers warm Indian Ocean water that hovers around 75įF/24įC, even during the winter. The topography here is
hilly and the view from the beach toward the city is interesting in its variety; in the opposite direction the blue water is soothing against the equally blue sky.
Along the famous promenade, tourists will find a plethora of things to do and see, like Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World, a midway with rides and cotton
candy, uShaka Marine World, skateboarding parks, kiosks with munchies and beach gear, and hustlers that sell all manner of things from knock-off watches to sandwiches.
The area near the beach is lined with busy clubs, bars and restaurants.
The South Coast Beach area is big on sports and has a large professional sports venue, Kings Park Stadium, home to the Durban rugby teams; pro teams also include
soccer and cricket, and tennis is a major spectator sport here. Beach volleyball is the participant sport on South Coast Beach, host of numerous surfing competitions
and powerboat races. There are several fabulous golf courses in the Durban area.
This is action central for South Africa, nothing like the other major cities such as Johannesburg and Cape Town. Itís an endless litany of fun, noise, play and life.
The beat here is built on the beachfront world of Durban. If visitors want more R&R on the beach, they should try the beach at Umhlanga Rocks, just north of South Coast
Beach, but while it may be technically safer, most people think itís boring. Beach fans donít come to Durban Beaches for peace and quiet!
